My Baby Turned 1

My baby is no longer a baby! Simon had his 1st birthday on Sep 29. We ended up dragging out the celebration for over a week...what a lucky guy!

It started the week before on 9/22 because both my dad and Brian's parents happened to both be in town and we decided to celebrate all together. We went out for frozen yogurt and Simon really liked it, but he may have enjoyed exploring the place more. Then on his actual birthday, we bought cupcakes. So after dinner we gave him a cupcake and excitedly awaited what he would do. He was pretty tired at this point and just wanted to go to bed so he didn't do much with it but bat it around on his tray. He didn't care for the frosting but when he knocked it upside down he grabbed at it and it crumbled in his hand. He finally took a few bites before basically throwing it all on the ground.

On Sunday night we had his actual "party" with my little sister and her husband. We had dinner together and then we had cake. One thing we found out is he is mesmerized by the candle flame. What kid wouldn't want to reach for a burning, flickering, flame?? It was really fun to watch him poke at his own personal cake. It wasn't my best work but I thought it turned out cute and wasn't about to spend tons of time on it for him to just destroy it. Maybe next year when he might appreciate it more.

Again, he wasn't a fan of having the frosting stick to his hands and he kept trying to dump it over the edge. Finally he broke off a piece and tried it and he seemed to like it more this time. I think the best part was how much ended up all over his pants and in his hair. He likes to pat his head, especially while eating, which creates a nice mess. He went straight up to the tub after this and that was after being wiped down with a washcloth first! I'm pretty sure he was carried at arms length to avoid any transfer.

Aunt Maria got to give him a bath and get him in pajamas. It was nice to not be the one getting splashed this time! He got some clothes and bath toys for presents. He has enjoyed the bath toys in the tub (and sometimes even out of the tub) ever since.

My baby sure is growing up. He is so smart. Some of the things he does right now:
  • When he hears the dogs next door bark he says "da" as in the first part of dog.
  • Climbs up on EVERYTHING!! Even when he falls and gets hurt he doesn't learn his lesson as he is getting right back up after he's done being comforted.
  • Says "dada" a lot. As of this past weekend we think he may be using it as a command as well as acknowledging Daddy.
  • LOVES his new front-facing car seat. He enjoys looking out the windows and just staring at everything when we're in the car now. It also helps that he can see us now too.
  • When we pull up to daycare or the house, he starts to get excited because he can see where we are and anticipates getting out!
  • Gives very wide-open mouthed, slobbery kisses.
  • Absolutely loves music. When music plays in a movie or when you sing he gets a big smile and gets noticeably excited. He usually starts bouncing if he's standing up or kicking his legs if he's sitting down. It is too cute to see his love for music continue.
  • Still loves bath time but splashes Mommy WAY more than he used to.
  • Is a wonderful eater. Daycare raves about his eating habits. Sometimes it's hard to get him to eat vegetables and he throws them on the ground, but then the next day he eats them just fine. So it takes determination on our part to just keep re-introducing some things until he realizes he does actually like them. It took 4 tries last week for him to eat the peaches at home even though he loves them at daycare. Now he can't get enough of them. Peaches and mandarin oranges are his two favorite sides with dinner.
  • Is the best hug giver! He has been extremely huggy lately. When I pick him up from day care he usually gives me a big hug. It often comes unexpected but is so cute to have him put his arms around me and lay his head on my shoulder. I love it!!

I am having issues posting more pictures on this post so I will try a new post with cake pictures.

I can't believe he is already 1!! He is so adorable and looks like a little man now and not a baby! So fun!
